A thought is a fleeting ripple of intelligence energy, a temporary vibration appearing in the field of knowing, and it has no independent substance because it is made of awareness itself, just as a knot is nothing but the string it is tied in, and if you sit with this long enough, brothers and sisters, you begin to see that this single observation dismantles an entire lifetime of mistaken identity, for we have been taught since childhood to believe that we are our thoughts, that the ceaseless commentary running through the mind is somehow the self, when in truth the Hermetic Initiate learns the opposite, that the thinker is not the thought any more than the ocean is the wave that rises and falls upon its surface, and this is precisely what the Kybalion points toward when it speaks of the ALL as Mind, for if the entire universe is mental in nature, then every thought you have ever had was never a possession, never a fixed thing you carry around like a stone in your pocket, but a temporary shape that awareness itself assumed for a moment before dissolving back into the field from which it came, and consider the knot, for it is the perfect image here, because a knot has no separate existence apart from the string, you cannot remove the knot and hold it in your hand independent of the rope it is tied in, and yet in the moment it appears, it looks like a distinct thing, it has a shape, a location, an identity, and this is exactly how the ego mistakes itself, believing every anxious thought, every judgment, every fear-based story to be a solid and permanent truth about who we are, when really it is simply consciousness momentarily knotted upon itself, and once untied, it returns to the formless intelligence it always was, and this is the deepest secret of Mentalism as a hermetic principle, that to master your life you do not need to fight your thoughts or suppress them or even believe you must eliminate them entirely, you need only recognize their nature, for what you resist persists, but what you see clearly loses its grip, and when the Initiate begins to observe thought as ripple rather than as self, something extraordinary happens, the inner fire that was once consumed by mental noise, by looping worry, by the compulsive need to control every outcome, is now freed to be directed with intention, because you cannot master energy you misidentify with, you can only master what you first see as separate from your essential nature, and this is why the Gospel of Thomas whispers that the kingdom is spread upon the earth and men do not see it, for the kingdom is this very awareness, ever present beneath the ripples, untouched by the storms that pass across its surface, and this is not a passive discovery of some hidden treasure waiting to be stumbled upon, it is an active transformation, a daily discipline of catching the knot as it forms and remembering the string beneath it, and here is where discipline meets inner pressure as true spiritual mastery, for the untrained mind will forever mistake its ripples for reality, reacting, spiraling, suffering, while the trained mind, the mind of the Initiate, watches the ripple rise, acknowledges its temporary vibration, and lets it return to stillness without resistance and without grasping, and this is the yin and yang of consciousness itself, the ripple and the field, the form and the formless, the wave that must exist because the ocean is alive, and the ocean that remains whole no matter how many waves pass through it, and so I offer you this practice, the next time a thought arises that frightens you or angers you or convinces you of some smallness, pause and ask yourself, what is this actually, is it solid, is it permanent, or is it simply a ripple, a temporary knot in the string of awareness, and in that pause, in that recognition, you reclaim your throne as the field itself rather than the fleeting disturbance upon it, for this is the beginning of true inner mastery, the awakening the sages have always pointed toward, not the silencing of the mind but the seeing through of it, and the words of wisdom I leave you with are these, you are not the ripple, you are the ocean that dreams it, and once you remember this, no thought, however violent its wave, can ever again convince you that you are anything less than the boundless intelligence from which it momentarily arose.
